Index your explorations
How a simple system lets you choose better from the million iterations you try.
As we start working with AI, it becomes apparent that prototyping pages and their interactions can be super easy. But that comes with the challenge of being able to track all the explorations.
I picked this up from a video where YC’s head of design is showing how she works with AI. She makes a mood board, gives Claude the references and a lot of context, and asks for a bunch of versions in one go. Then (the part I stole) she keeps them all on one page so she can compare them and keep what works in the best ones.
So I have done this three times on my own portfolio -
The homepage. Twenty-four homepages (yes, twenty-four). Instead of opening 24 tabs, there’s one index page. Every version is a row, with a sneak peek on hover and a small description of what I tried to do.
The Featured list – four layouts for the same five projects, in one page. A small ‹ 1/4 › switch (or the arrow keys) swaps the layout in place. The photos, the copy and the scroll position stay exactly the same, only the layout changes.
Experiments and Writing – five ways to show side projects and posts (a shelf that scrolls sideways, a contact sheet, pages you could pick up…). Same index page, five rows.
It’s easy to make now, so a big onus is on us to figure out how to structure our explorations. Looking for more ways to organise, and if you have any let me know!
